Hi. Remember me? That person whose videos you used to be entertained by, before she lost her job, had a dead computer, and all sorts of other fun personal issues you don’t care about?
Well here’s the deal, guys: I have a new job now that I love, that allows me evenings and weekends again, and allowed me to get myself a new computer! And so, here I stand: asking if, once again, you would come back, be my fans, watch my videos, and read my blog posts. Whatada say? Forgive me for disappearing on you?
I can say that, even though I didn’t produce much, if any content over the last few months, re-watching those videos, and reading your comments, have been integral to getting me through a very, very difficult time in my life. So thank you for helping me weathered the storm. We’re back in port now, the skies are blue, the birds are singing, and it’s time to go kick some Combine ASS!
I do have one issue that maybe you can help me with. Since this is a new machine, I don’t have all my old saves from the old computer. There may be a way I can get them back, but it won’t be easy. What would be ideal is getting them back from the Steam synch Cloud–they don’t seem to have synched automatically. Anyone have experience in fixing that issue? If not I think it will be okay, it just may not be until next week I get to play and record if that’s the case. I’ll satiate you with at least one blog post if I can’t get my save game via Cloud. You have my word on that. 😀

Glad you’re back, and glad your life is getting better too. I’d totally watch them if you put up new videos, sadly I have no experience in retrieving save files, but hopefully someone does.

Nice to have you back. Or nearly so. Can’t help with the save file issue, except to say, I don’t think those are stored in the cloud. Maybe I’m wrong about that, but I have the impression it just stores things like achievements and playing time. Save files are much larger in comparison. And you don’t get that much space in the Steam Cloud.
So, I’m thinking you’ll have to get those save files off of your old hard drive. For a desktop PC, if the hard drive is not damaged, that’s not too difficult, but of course it depends on your comfort and expertise with opening up the case and messing around with connections (or whether you can get someone to do it for you). Or alternatively, you could get a USB hard drive enclosure or some such, but that might be expensive.
In the case of a laptop, I don’t know. I might not try it myself.
Well, however you go about this, I wish you luck, and I look forward to your triumphant return to the world of Half-Life.
Yep, pulling the HD and getting the files off that way is exactly what I’m going to have to do. (100% perfectly comfortable with that. The new job I got is as an IT monkey, doing help desk support and computer swaps/upgrades/rollouts. So this is totally in my wheelhouse.) I already have the files off the drive and onto my flash (yay lunch break!) and just have to get them happily playing and recognized by Steam on my new machine. Shouldn’t be too much issue.
The only reason I asked about the Cloud is because, if there was a way to recover it, I could start playing before the weekend. As it is, though, I’ll probably be recording today, editing tomorrow, and have the next vid up by Monday or Tuesday (depending on your time zone/Earthly location of choice.)

I only just saw this blog entry; I was really curious as to what had happened with you. I know this post is a few months old, but I wanted to let you know that PCGamingWiki is always good for finding where saves are stored. It has the info for Half-Life 2 here:

Unfortunately nothing for Portal 2, but those seem to be stored at steamapps\common\portal 2\portal2\SAVE.

I was wondering what happened to you! Glad to see everything’s much more stable. Can’t wait for more videos!
Did not know that things were bad, but hearing that they are better brings a big smile to my face, and I wish they keep going that way.
A note about your videos: Every one has not just been delightful while it plays, but has made all the time that follows afterwards a little more pleasant as well. I encourage you to have that in mind if you worry about delays you’ve had on the channel — the joy you already gave is still at work 🙂
